Quick Start / Step 3

Step 3: A quick tour of the app Beginner

Grok Bot looks a lot like a messaging app, and that's on purpose: you give your bots work by chatting with them. This tour walks through the main parts of the window so you know where things live before you start.

What you'll learn

  • What the sidebar is for
  • How a bot's chat works
  • How to open a bot's info pane
  • How to open Settings

1. The sidebar

The sidebar on the left lists your bots. Click one to open its chat. Near the top there's a New Bot (+) button for adding bots (see Step 6). At the bottom-left is your account button, showing your avatar and account name; clicking it opens Settings.

2. The chat

Each bot has its own chat. You type a request, and the bot works on it and replies. Write it the way you'd brief a coworker: what result you want, which sources matter, any limits, and where it should stop and check with you. You can also attach a document to work on.

3. The bot's info pane

Click the bot's name in the chat header (or press Cmd+Shift+I) to open that bot's info pane. It shows:

The gear next to the pane's "X" opens that bot's own settings page (avatar, name, title, description and notifications). Click the "X" to close the pane.

4. Settings

App-wide settings open from the account button at the bottom-left, the Cmd+, shortcut, or "Open settings" in the command palette. There's no gear icon for app settings. Step 4 covers each tab.

5. Approvals in the chat

Sometimes a bot stops and asks before doing something, like sending a message. Those requests show up for you to approve or decline. Step 14 explains them.

Ideas to try

  • Orientation.
Give me a 2-minute tour of what's on my screen.
  • Find things.
Where do I see my routines and connected apps?
  • Cheat sheet.
Make me a one-page cheat sheet of the main buttons.

Tips

  • Two different "settings": the account button opens app-wide Settings, and the gear in a bot's info pane opens settings for just that bot.
  • Keyboard fans: Cmd+, opens Settings and Cmd+Shift+I opens the info pane.
  • Give each bot one clear job. Its chat stays easier to follow.
