Quick Start / Step 6

Step 6: Creating your first bot Beginner

Your primary bot can do a lot, but focused bots get better at their job because they build up context in one area. This step shows how to add a new bot and give it a clear first assignment.

What you'll learn

  • How to add a bot
  • What to say in its first message
  • Why one job per bot works best
  • What to do next

1. Add a bot

  1. In the sidebar, choose New Bot (the + button).
  2. Type a name for the bot.
  3. Choose Create. The new bot appears in the sidebar with its own chat.

If you're on a Cursor team, the docs describe a separate "Create new Team Bot" command in the command palette for bots your teammates can chat with. For a personal bot, use New Bot.

2. Give it one job in its first message

Cursor's guide recommends giving each bot one main job in its first message and asking it to remember how to work. For example:

Your job is managing my newsletter inbox. Each morning, summarize new newsletters in a short list with links. Never unsubscribe or delete anything without asking me. Remember this for future work.

3. Why focused bots work better

4. Give it a first task

Try something small that finishes in a few minutes, then review it. Ask for changes, and say clearly which preferences should stick, for example "always use this format for reports".

5. What's next

Give the bot a clear name and description (Step 7), then connect the apps it needs (Step 9).

Ideas to try

  • Home helper.
Create a bot that helps me plan weekly meals and grocery lists.
  • Side hustle.
Create a bot for my Etsy shop's customer emails.
  • Study buddy.
Create a bot that quizzes me on Spanish vocabulary daily.

Tips

  • Small first task, then grow. It's easier to fix a process when it's simple.
  • Include what the bot must never do in its first message.
  • When a process is stable, save it as a skill or routine (Steps 10 and 11).
