Quick Start / Step 11

Step 11: Routines (scheduled tasks) Beginner

A routine is a saved prompt that runs by itself, either on a schedule ("every weekday at 8 AM") or when something happens outside the app (like a new email arriving). Routines turn one-off requests into reliable habits.

What you'll learn

  • What a routine is
  • Schedule vs. event triggers
  • How to create one by asking
  • Where to see a bot's routines

1. What a routine is

A routine is a prompt you've saved for a bot to run again and again. It's the same kind of request you'd type in chat, written so it works without you there. Examples:

2. Two kinds of triggers

3. Create a routine by asking

The simplest way is to ask the bot in its chat. Say what should happen, when, and what you want back:

Every weekday at 8 AM, check my calendar for today and send me a short summary here in chat.

The bot sets up the routine and confirms the details. Check the time and time zone in its reply.

4. See a bot's routines

Open the bot's info pane by clicking its name in the chat header (or Cmd+Shift+I). The Routines list appears below the computer preview. Each bot has its own list.

5. Pause, change or stop

Ask the bot to change the time, the instructions, or stop a routine. According to Cursor's docs, you can also pause and resume routines from the phone app. Testing routines stays on desktop.

6. Show it once

Grok Bot can also learn a workflow by watching you do it once, then save it as a routine. That's a desktop feature, handy for multi-step website tasks.

Ideas to try

  • Morning briefing.
Every weekday at 7 AM, summarize my calendar and the weather.
  • Bills.
On the 1st of each month, remind me of bills due.
  • Shop.
Every Monday, summarize last week's orders.

Tips

  • Set your time zone in Settings, General before scheduling.
  • Run the task once by hand first. If the result is good, make it a routine.
  • Routines that send emails or messages still draft them for your approval.
