Abandoned-cart follow-up Intermediate

Remind shoppers who left a checkout, respectfully, with one or two messages.

What you'll learn

  • Built-in vs marketing emails
  • Consent and limits

Before you start

1. Use the built-in feature first

Many platforms have an abandoned-checkout email built in (Shopify does, for example). Turn that on before building anything.

2. Marketing emails need consent

A built-in checkout reminder is different from marketing emails. Extra promotional follow-ups generally need the shopper's marketing consent; follow your platform's settings and local laws.

3. Keep it to one or two

  1. First reminder a few hours later.
  2. Optional second one a day or so later.
  3. Then stop.

4. Where a bot helps

Writing the reminder text, and reporting how many carts were recovered.

Ideas to try

  • Small shop.
Draft a friendly abandoned-checkout email in my voice.
  • Report.
How many abandoned checkouts last month, and how many recovered?
  • Check settings.
Explain my store's abandoned-checkout settings in plain words.
  • Improve.
Suggest 3 reasons people might be leaving at checkout based on my shipping costs page.

Tips

  • No pressure tactics.
  • Respect unsubscribes.
  • Fix the reason people leave (surprise shipping costs) too.
