Your first week with a bot: a simple day-by-day plan Explainer
3 min read
Not sure where to start? This plan spreads the basics over seven short days, so you learn one thing at a time and finish the week with a bot that does one real job for you.
The short version
You don't have to learn everything at once. Spend about fifteen minutes a day for a week, try one new thing each day, and stick with small, safe jobs. By day seven you'll know how to ask for things, how to check the results and how to make a job happen without asking every time.
Day 1: Get set up and say hello
Install the app, sign in and create your first bot. The Quick Start walks through each step. Then just talk to it. Ask what it can help with, or ask it to explain something you've been curious about. Nothing you do today touches your other apps.
Day 2: Practice asking clearly
Give it a few small jobs that don't need any of your accounts, like drafting a note, making a checklist or planning a meal. Practice saying the goal, the details and the shape of the answer you want. See How to write a request your bot gets right the first time.
Day 3: Connect one app
Pick the one app you use most, often email or a calendar, and connect just that one. Start with jobs that only read, like "summarize my unread email" or "list tomorrow's meetings". See Connecting apps, and read what to share (and not share) with your bot first.
Day 4: Check its work
Ask for something you can easily verify, then open the original and compare. Did it miss anything? Get a detail wrong? This shows you how much to trust it and where to look closely. See how to check a bot's work.
Day 5: Choose one real job
Think about the small task you repeat most often and hand that one over. Good first jobs repeat often, are quick to describe and are easy to undo. See How to pick a good first job for your bot. If it sends or changes anything, have the bot draft it and wait for your OK.
Day 6: Teach it your preferences
By now you've probably corrected it a few times. Ask it to remember the things you keep repeating, like the format you like or what to leave out. See Memory. If the job has several steps that worked well, save them as a skill.
Day 7: Put it on a schedule
If your job happens at the same time every day or week, set it up as a routine so it runs without you asking. Keep checking the results for the first few runs. Then look back at the week: is it saving you time? See how to find out.
If you fall behind
That's fine. The days are just a suggested order, not a deadline. Skip ahead, repeat a day or stretch the plan over two weeks. The only part worth keeping is the order: ask, check, connect, then automate. If something stops working along the way, see When your bot gets stuck.
Where to go next
Once your first job runs smoothly, try a bigger one. How to break a big job into small steps shows how to take it on safely, and Staying safe with AI bots covers the habits worth keeping as your bot does more.
Ideas to try
- Starting day 1.
I'm brand new to this. In a few short sentences, tell me what kinds of everyday jobs you can help with, and suggest one simple thing for me to try right now.
- Trying a read-only job on day 3.
Summarize my unread email from today as a short list with the sender, the subject and whether it needs a reply. Don't reply to or change anything.
- Teaching a preference on day 6.
From now on, when you summarize my email, leave out newsletters and put anything from customers at the top. Remember this and tell me what you saved.
