Step 13: Memory Beginner
Memory is how a bot holds onto lasting facts: your preferences, how you like things done, and details it shouldn't have to ask about twice. Each bot has its own memory, so a specialist gets better at its job over time.
What you'll learn
- What memory is for
- How to add, check and correct memories
- What shouldn't go in memory
1. What memory is
Normally a chat request is about one task. Memory is for things that should last across tasks, for example:
- "My reports always use US dates and bullet points."
- "I'm in Central time; don't schedule anything before 9 AM."
- "For the newsletter bot: skip anything from promotional senders."
2. Each bot has its own memory
Each bot keeps its own memory alongside its own chat, name and description. That's one reason focused bots work well: an inbox bot remembers inbox preferences without picking up details from your research bot.
3. Add a memory
Just say it clearly and ask the bot to remember it:
Remember: when you summarize meetings, always list action items first, with owners.
Cursor's guide recommends naming lasting preferences explicitly, like a report format you want reused, and asking a new bot to remember how it should work.
4. Check and correct
Ask "What do you remember about how I like reports?" If something's wrong or out of date, say "Forget that" or give the corrected version.
5. What not to put in memory
Don't ask a bot to remember passwords, card numbers or other secrets. Those belong in the Vault (Step 14).
Ideas to try
- Preferences.
Remember I like short replies and US date format.
- Family.
Remember my kids' school pickup is 3:15 on weekdays.
- Review.
What do you remember about me?
Tips
- Use "Remember" when you mean it to last. Otherwise the bot may treat it as a one-time instruction.
- Review a busy bot's memory every so often and clear out old preferences.
- Facts in memory, steps in skills: if it's a procedure, save it as a skill.
