Quick Start / Step 7

Step 7: Naming and describing your bots Beginner

A bot's name and description aren't just labels. They help you find the right chat quickly, and they help your primary bot decide where to send work. This step shows where to edit them and how to write good ones.

What you'll learn

  • Where a bot's name, title and description are edited
  • How to write a useful description
  • Naming habits that scale

1. Open the bot's settings

  1. Open the bot's chat from the sidebar.
  2. Click the bot's name in the chat header (or press Cmd+Shift+I) to open its info pane.
  3. Click the gear next to the "X" in the pane's header. This opens that bot's settings page, with its avatar, name, title, description and notification settings.

These are per-bot settings and aren't the same as the app-wide Settings window from Step 4.

2. Pick a clear name

3. Use the title for a one-line role

A short title, such as "Sorts and summarizes my newsletters", helps you tell bots apart at a glance.

4. Write a description that routes well

The description is where you say what the bot handles, and what it doesn't. A good one covers:

Handles my personal Gmail: daily triage, newsletter summaries and reply drafts. Doesn't handle work email or calendar changes.

Because the primary bot routes tasks to your other bots (Step 5), a precise description makes it more likely the right bot gets the job.

5. Set notifications

The same page has notification settings for that bot. Quiet bots that run in the background may not need alerts; bots that ask for approvals probably do.

Want each bot to stand out even more? Step 8: Customize your bot covers pictures and colors.

Ideas to try

  • Clarity.
Rewrite my bot's description so it's clear what it handles.
  • Several bots.
Suggest names for my home, work and shop bots.
  • Routing.
Which of my bots should handle invoice questions?

Tips

  • Revisit descriptions when a bot's job changes.
  • If two bots keep getting each other's tasks, make their descriptions more distinct.
  • A different avatar per bot makes the sidebar easier to scan.
