Quick Start / Step 5

Step 5: What the primary bot does Beginner

When you first sign in, Grok Bot creates a bot for you, named Grok Bot. Think of it as your main point of contact: you can give it any task, and once you have several bots it can pass the work to the one best suited for it. This step explains the idea so you know when to use it and when to go straight to a specialist.

What you'll learn

  • What the primary bot is
  • How routing to other bots works
  • When to message the primary bot vs. a specialist
  • How to get good results from it

1. Your first bot

Right after the intro, the app opens a chat with a bot called Grok Bot. Out of the box it's a general helper: ask it to research something, summarize a document, draft an email, or work in a website for you.

2. One front door, many specialists

As you add bots (an inbox helper, a research bot, a reports bot), the primary bot becomes a front door. You can tell it what you need without remembering which bot does what, and it routes the task to the right one of your other bots. Each bot still keeps its own chat, name, description and memory, so the specialist builds up experience in its area.

This is why clear descriptions matter (Step 7): a description that says exactly what a bot is for helps work end up in the right place.

3. When to go direct

4. Write a good request

A strong request states the outcome you want, the sources that matter, any limits, what you want back, and where the bot should stop and check with you. For example:

Summarize this document in five bullets. List every date, decision and open question separately. Don't change the source file.

Ideas to try

  • Daily start.
Each morning, tell me what's on my calendar and what to focus on.
  • Delegation.
Send shop questions to my store bot.
  • Overview.
What can each of my bots do?

Tips

  • Start with only the primary bot. Add specialists when you notice a kind of task you repeat.
  • If work goes to the wrong bot, improve that bot's description.
  • You can always open any bot's chat yourself to see what it's doing.
