A live-chat bot for order status and delivery dates Advanced
A website chat bot can answer "where's my order?" by checking the order and carrier tracking, after confirming who it's talking to.
What you'll learn
- Verifying the customer
- Looking up order and tracking
- Handing off to a human
Before you start
- The Grok Bot app, installed and signed in. New? See where to download it and installing and signing in.
- Your store's API and a carrier tracking API.
- A website where you can add a chat widget.
1. The flow
- The customer types their order number plus the order email or ZIP.
- The bot checks both match before sharing anything.
- It looks up the order status and tracking number.
- It checks the carrier (UPS, USPS, FedEx) for the latest status and estimated delivery.
- It answers in plain words.
- If unsure or the customer is upset, it hands off to a human.
2. Build pieces
A small backend (for example a Cloudflare Worker) holds API keys, never the web page. See Your First Bot for the receive-think-respond loop.
3. Safety
- Share the minimum: status and date, not full addresses.
- Rate-limit lookups to stop guessing.
- Log conversations.
Ideas to try
- Plan it.
Sketch the architecture for an order-status chat on my Shopify site.
- Test data.
Write 10 test conversations, including wrong ZIP codes.
- Handoff.
Draft the message the bot shows when handing off to me.
- FAQ.
Also let it answer our shipping-time FAQ from this page.
Tips
- Never reveal data before verification.
- Keep keys on the server.
- Test with fake orders first.
