Custom-domain email with forwarding (Cloudflare Email Routing) Intermediate
Create addresses like [email protected] and forward them to an inbox you already have, using Cloudflare Email Routing.
What you'll learn
- What Email Routing does
- Setting up an address
- Rules and actions
Before you start
- The Grok Bot app, installed and signed in. New? See where to download it and installing and signing in.
- A domain using Cloudflare for DNS.
- An inbox to forward to.
1. What it is
Email Routing lets you make custom addresses on your domain and forward incoming mail to a verified inbox. It doesn't give you a mailbox to send from; it only receives and forwards.
2. Steps
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, open your domain and go to Email Routing.
- Follow the setup; Cloudflare adds the needed DNS records (MX and SPF) for you.
- Add a destination address and click the verification link it sends.
- Create a custom address (like support@) and choose the action.
- Send a test email to the new address.
3. Actions
Rules can forward, drop, or send mail to an Email Worker (code you write; see Processing inbound email). A catch-all rule can handle any address.
4. Bot help
With the Cloudflare connector your bot can explain settings. Ask it to show changes before applying, since DNS changes affect your mail.
Ideas to try
- Small business.
Explain how to set up [email protected] forwarding to my Gmail.
- Side hustle.
Create a plan for orders@ and support@ addresses on my domain.
- Spam control.
Should I use a catch-all? Explain the pros and cons.
- Check.
List my Email Routing rules and what each does. Don't change anything.
Tips
- Forwarded mail can be marked spam if the sender's domain is strict; check spam folders at first.
- Keep one destination you check daily.
- Write down your rules.
