Quick Start / Step 16

Step 16: Removing a bot you no longer need Beginner

Over time you might end up with bots you don't use. Removing them keeps your sidebar tidy and makes routing to the right bot easier. Deleting is permanent, though, so this step covers how to do it and what to check first.

What you'll learn

  • How to delete a bot
  • What deleting removes
  • What to check before you delete
  • Alternatives to deleting

1. Before you delete

Deleting a bot is permanent. It removes the bot and its chat history, and there's no archive or hide option. Before you go ahead:

2. Delete the bot

  1. In the sidebar, right-click the bot's row.
  2. Choose "Delete".
  3. Confirm when asked.

Deleting is done from the sidebar only, not from Settings.

3. Consider changing it instead

If the bot is still useful but its job changed, you don't have to delete it. Open the gear in its info pane and update its name, title and description (Step 7), then tell it about its new job and ask it to forget old preferences.

4. Afterward

If other bots used to send work to the deleted one, your primary bot will route that work elsewhere. Check that another bot's description covers those tasks if you still need them done.

That's all 15 steps. From here, try the Your First Bot tutorial, or head back to the Quick Start overview.

Ideas to try

  • Cleanup.
Which of my bots haven't been used this month?
  • Before removing.
List the routines this bot has before I delete it.
  • Consolidate.
Merge my two shop bots' instructions into one.

Tips

  • Delete is permanent: no archive, no undo.
  • Check the Routines list first so scheduled work doesn't quietly stop.
  • Rename and re-describe instead of deleting when the job just changed.
